Roma states
In our society the Roma have the role of the “strangers”. Although they live to our country for centuries we tend to believe that they are here occasionally. The nomad life and the fact that they live in settlements makes us believe that they are temporary here during an endless journey. The project “Roma states” registers the different way of life of those who live in certain houses.
Looking at the photos which compose the project we can realize the significance of understanding and familiarizing with the persons and the surroundings. It is clear that I face the persons I‘ve taken photos with sympathy and respect.
The way I‘ve chosen to take photos is frontal and so the audience by placing the sight in front of the scene can connect the persons and the places with the traditional portrait photo. The children, the teenagers and the adults in the photos stand in front of the camera like they are in the studio. They are serious and they bring back to the ritual of the portrait photo the fear and the perplexity, things that the modern technology has expelled. At last “Roma states” turn our sight to a world and a way of life without the prejudice which leads Roma to the margin of our society and isolation.
